About Wire & Cable
Many wires come in two primary conductor configurations. First is Solid, which comes as a single conductor that may be either bare or insulated with an outer layer. This configuration type is perfect for low resistance or high frequency environments. Second is Stranded, which is where a certain number of strands of wires is twisted together. The amount of strands are determined by the manufacturer and gauge size of the wire. Stranded wire is useful for situations where flexibility is of concern. This type of wire has a larger cross-sectional area than solid wires for the same current carrying capacity.
There is a vast amount of unique cables, including but not limited to, twisted pair cable, multi-conductor cable, coaxial cable, fire alarm cable, and fiber optic cable. A twisted pair cable has two cables that are twisted across each other. Twisting can avoid noise that’s produced by magnetic coupling, so this type of cable is best suited for carrying signals. It is most commonly used in data and tele communication. Multi-conductor cable has two or more conductors that are insulated individually. The insulation is used to protect signal integrity by reducing hum, noise, and cross talk. This type of cable is used in communications, sound, control, audio, and data transmission. Fire Alarm cable a special type of multi-pair cable with FPLR or FPLP rated insulations and a red colored jacket. Fiber Optics cable transmits signals using a quantity of glass threads or fibers. Fiber Optics cables have a larger bandwidth than metal cables and succumb to fewer instances of interference.
The wire and cable industry uses a variety of metal conductors, but the two most common are copper and aluminum. Conductors have different properties such as conductivity, tensile strength, weight and environmental exposure. It may not be clear cut whether to use aluminum over copper in every situation.
