About Electrical Power Products

Electrical power products are an integral part of our society’s infrastructure and continue to allow us the conveniences and efficiencies that drive us forward. An important recurring feature in the electrical world is protection from electrical surge, shortage, and outage. Circuit breakers often use mechanically stored energy to interrupt flow of electricity after a certain threshold of voltage or current is reached. Surge protectors work in a similar fashion in that when a high enough spike in voltage is detected, it is rerouted from the main circuit to a grounding wire.

There are many different types of ways to route power from one point to another and just as important as how to route power is how is it accessed. There are many types of outlets with different voltage and amperage ratings. When choosing an outlet it is important to keep in mind where it will be placed. If water is likely to meet the area, a ground-fault circuit interrupting outlet, or GFCI outlet may be required. If your project is in a hospital, a special Hospital Grade outlet will be required.

Control and energy waste are always of concern in any environment. Occupancy sensors can help cut down cost of electricity by automatically removing power to lighting or other devices based on detected motion in the room they are monitoring. Power distribution units, or PDU’s, filter power to allow for higher quality power, handle load balancing, and enables you to remotely monitor the environment it is attached to.

FAQs

DO YOU HAVE A FIRE-RATED POKE-THROUGH (FRPT) THAT CAN BE INSTALLED IN A CONCRETE FLOOR THAT CAN BE SPACED CLOSER THAN 1 PER 65 SQUARE FEET?

No, no one does. The 1 FRPT per 65 square feet is a UL spacing restriction. UL requires a two FRPTs have a minimum distance of 2 feet on center and not more than one unit per 65 square feet of floor area in each span.

HOW MUCH SPACE DOES THE CONNECTOR ON A HUBBELL SNAP CONNECT RECEPTACLE TAKE UP IN THE BOX (CU.IN.)?

The SNAPConnect pigtailed terminal on its own, does not have any effective box fill, according to NEC®2008 314.16(B)(1), since it doesn't originate outside and/or passes through the device box and has leads that are 6 inches long and would not be considered a loop or coil. When installed with the matching receptacle, the assembly (receptacle with the pigtailed terminal) will have a double volume allowance in accordance with Table 314.16(B) for each SNAPConnect receptacle in the device box. Now, assuming that you are feeding the device box with #12 AWG conductors, then your volume allowance for each SNAPConnect receptacle with pigtail would require 4.5 cu. in. (2 times 2.25 cu. in. for #12 AWG

WHAT DOES RMS MEAN?

It stands for Root-Mean-Squared. It is used in conjunction with AC Volts and AC Amps to express an average value. A true RMS calculation takes into account the shape and phases of the wave forms being delivered to a circuit. AC voltage and current are ever-changing values. Using RMS measurements provides useful values.

WHAT IS A GFCI?

A GFCI is a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter and is normally part of a breaker or outlet. This component measures the amperage on the hot and neutral wires. When there is a difference of greater than 5 milliamps between both the wires the GFCI will act as a circuit breaker and cut off the power.
